What is the best way to treat for a rat in my garden?

I saw a LARGE rat in the garden. We have had them before so I know what Big means. I don't know if a regular trap would kill him. I have one hole and was thinking of smoke. It is not cold here yet but the weather will turn in the next few weeks. I have sprayed all wood within 400 feet with repel .
