Will Hi-Yield 2,4-D harm arborvitaes if sprayed around their base to control poison ivy?

Poison ivy is doing a number on my mature arborvitaes. One poison ivy trunk was 5 inches in diameter at the base wrapped around the arborvitae base. Cut it with pruning saw.

Answer:

You should not spray 2,4-D products such as Hi-Yield 2,4-D in a way where the spray or drift could contact desirable trees or ornamentals. 2,4-D also has some volatility, so you do not want to spray it close to trees, shrubs, flowers, etc. If you are able to cut the poison ivy, then we would recommend treating the fresh cuts immediately after cutting using a brush killer full strength, such as Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer. You can use a dedicated or disposable paint brush to apply the herbicide directly to the cuts. This application also takes away concern about overspraying.
