Betty from Sun City West writes

Will tomato seedlings be affected by an application of Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate that was applied about 2 feet away from the seedlings. Worried about the tomatoes possibly absorbing the herbicide.

Husband sprayed today 9/4 tomato seedings within 2 1/2 feet. Tomato will produce fruit in 45 days. Want to know if ground clear may potentially be absorbed by this plant.

Answer:

Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate works by killing vegetation down to the root, and by preventing new growth for at least one year.  According to the product label, this should not be applied before planting lawns, fruits, vegetables, flowers or other plants, because this product remains active in soil for up to one year.  We recommend contacting the manufacturer directly for clarification by either calling 1-800-225-2883, or by visiting their website's contact page here.
