John from Port Townsend, Wa writes

Will Weedmaster control creeping buttercup (ranunculus repens)?

Made hay in August. A month later, after the grass and the weeds had started to regrow, I hit the pastures with Weedmaster. It obliterated Canada thistle, dock and tulipnd got most of the blackberry, The buttercup leaves started turning brown and I thought it was working on that too, but the plant recovered and took over the fields. Now, 6 months later and after snow on the ground for 10 days, I was amazed to see that the buttercup has largely gone away. Did it take Weedmaster that long to work? Did the freezing weather play a part? Both?

Answer:

We would say that both the Weedmaster and the snow played a part. Creeping Buttercup is a cool season weed that begins to flower in the springtime, but it's during the winter months that the vegetative growth of buttercup takes place.  Treating in the fall prevented many of those seeds from germinating over the fall and repopulating.   For more detailed information, we would suggest contacting your Cooperative Extension Office for information.
